San Francisco Chronicle App Reviews

Slow, unstable, frustrating

The more they fix it the worse it gets. Too bad theres no zero stars rating. I grew up on the Chron and live in the Bay Area. I would love to get my news from the Chron online but this app just makes it too hard. I get my news from TV and NY Times online now. Its like the Chron is trying to go out of business.

Offline availability

Wish I could read content when not net connected....as I can with NYT / WSJ and Press Democrat!!

Its just terrible

The old app would download the entire daily paper quickly and efficiently. Through many revisions, this new version still just doesnt work. I find myself giving up and going to the New York Times and getting then getting my local news from one of the TV station apps.

East Bay Times app has so much more to offer

I hope the makers of this app will have a look at the East Bay Times app. It has so much more to offer. The main thing I like about it is that I can share articles, but theres much more.

Terrible

What an awful newspaper app. The old one was just fine. Now you cant tell what is current news and what in months old. No effort put into this from the Chronicle.

Pls bring back your daily email!

This app is not only unstable but the user interface is awful. Please bring back your daily email link to the paper. They had a much more logical layout similar to the print version.

A Mess

Slow, slow, slow. And poorly organized. I will probably cancel.

Buggy

Needs improvement. My paid subscription is thwarted by freezes, crashes and slow or no opening of articles.

Disappointed

I have been an SF Chron fan since the late 70s and while I had issues with the quality of the paper issues, I never thought the online version would be as equally frustrating. It is sad and very disappointing that the IT people on your staff appear to care so little about this app. I would love the challenge to convince friends and family to go sans pink and green sections and become lifelong subscribers, but I would be remiss.

Horrible

The arrogance of Hearst Newspapers to have such a horrible app! And you cant even read one article on iPad without logging in as a subscriber. If you have a delivery subscription, you still have to create a new & separate log in for the app and the interface is almost impossible. My hope was to read Chronicle online during the election, but now Im going to cancel everything with these jokers.

Latest update is broken

The app crashes right after opening.

Better than it was, still crap

Is there anything worse than the SF Chronicle iPad app? Well trump was elected president. But thats probably the only thing with that distinction. SF Chronicle is a part of my daily habit. I would prefer a printed version, but the chronicle was never able to get it to my house. The previous iPad version was so bad I just used safari to read. This one is good enough Ive switched back to the app. Navigation is sane, which is nice. Theres a lot of old content that hangs around, and so its hard to know if Ive hit the end of "new news" or if the stream is just poorly designed. I see some articles for MONTHS like the AirBnB series. The front page is slow loading, and if you leave the app (say to google something you just read) and return you wont be in the article you were reading anymore. The ads are super spammy. Its like visiting a site thats trying to phish you. Viagra, investment strategies, etc. I pay for this subscription, why the ads and why are they so bad? There are article with no moving content, except an animated gif of an ad making the articles really hard to read. Also, if I want to share an article I only need a link. I dont want the SF Chronicle to fill my clipboard with pre filled text. Finally, why does it take more than 60 seconds for the app to load?

Opportunity Lost

This app continues to be a massive disappointment. Its slow to load, difficult to download for offline reading, and most importantly it lacks the emotional appeal that set the previous app (and the Chronicle) apart from all the other major US City papers. Gone is a format that leaned on the familiar layout of the print edition, with navigational features resembling the physical quality of reading the paper. Gone is the ability to easily display the stunning photographs. After a years worth of bad reviews this app continues to be a horrible reading experience on iPad. I wont renew my subscription solely because this app is no good!

sf chronicle app IPAD

this is the slowest worst newspaper app of all I read... It is an embarrassment to silicon valley. Some things never load, savimg editions to read off line is interminable.. takes forever to download, sf gate is much faster.

Simply pathetic

Fascinating how an app for the main newspaper in SF can be SO bad!!! Its pitiful! Dont waste your time on it. Just go to twitter or something to get local news, this app is non functional!

No Improvements Seen

Despite the bad reviews, this app has not improved. Slow, outdated stories, hard to navigate. Poor customer service.

Too many old articles

You expect to read the daily events and breaking news of the past 24 hours. Why does the app content have 20-30% of its article as old carry over articles that may show up for days, weeks and even months at a time. I dont want to spend my time wading past old stories every day to get to the pertinent news of the day.

Simply a Terrible App

Slow, hard to navigate, takes up storage which builds, pushes adds.

App buggy and annoying

This app is really bug laden--lots of crashes, wont load except after a full reboot, miscellaneous halts. However, Id rather read the Chronicle this way so Ill deal. The new version of the crosswords REALLY doesnt work well: very hard to read and usually wont load.

Worthless

Worthless. Dont waste your time with this app. It takes more than 5 minutes to load an article, really, I timed it. Or it crashes. I have a digital subscription to the Chron for local news but Im canceling it as I cant read the news with this app.
