Pros and cons of San Francisco Chronicle app for iPhone and iPad

San Francisco Chronicle app good for

Its a great app ... One of the best newspaper apps out there.
I liked this app.! Perfect for a visitor like me to San Fran. Sure the download & go option took a bit to happen(5-10min)but once finished I was reading all day throughout my many tours & travels. Well written relevant articles, love how you can scroll easily from section to section, with sub- headings on the left side, so I can choose which to read. Great app. Give this a chance, you will enjoy!
Impressive and intuitevly clear way of presenting a newspaper with the help of new technologies. Super! Five stars without any doubt!
All your favorite columnists and features — plus interactive projects and special reports — all in the palm of you hand!!!

Some bad moments

The app crashes regularly. Technical support does not answer emails. No login data made available for digital account. Tech support does not answer. Cannot figure out how to unsubscribe. Tech support does not answer emails. I can find 95% of content from other online sources, many times one or two days earlier. Too bad, I originally studied to be a print journalist. I understand the diminisioning returns for print editions in the digital age. But the Chronicle app itself is questionable. I cannot decide between one and two stars.
Now that the major newspapers are all starting to charge for their iPad apps Im going to whittle down to 1 paid app and it certainly wont be this one. So clutttered, so many windows, not responsive to swipes. It looks like 6 MS Windows resized to fit on a small screen. I detest paying for a subscription only to have to endure more ads.
What a horrible app! Compared to the New York Times, this is awfully slow to download, horrible to navigate, and frankly it is so bad, it makes trying to read the Chronicle such a terrible experience, its not worth trying. Chronicle people, try some other newspaper apps and learn how to develop an app that works.
free trial was about to run out so i trashed it, not much worth reading sad to say.
Of all of the apps that I have used over the past several years, this one is the worst. I still have it because I need a source of local information, and occasionally the article some selves are very good. That is especially true in the sports section. Technically it is just awful. Some mornings I cant open it and I actually have to shut off my computer to get back on and open it. Articles freeze in mid – read. As another reviewer pointed out, articles can last on the front page for days making it impossible to figure out what to do and what isnt. It makes us think that the Chronicle is trying to discourage its electronic readers enough they will go back to the print version.
I am rewriting my review. I had previously given this app 1 star (because 0 star was not an option). It is now at the end of January, 2016 and I find the app greatly improved. The format has not changed (Im getting used to it) but the performance of the app has greatly Improved! It loads within seconds instead of minutes. Someone has been tweaking it. Nice work. Revision October, 2016: Back to slow. Ive learned to open the app and make my coffee while I wait for it to boot up. I wish there was another way to get the Chronicle besides paper.
